Dreading Standard Time

This is the last opportunity to play with the slightest bit of daylight. Because this weekend daylight savings time ends. 6 is the new 7. So one more night in dusk, then its full-on dark for months.

I saw an xtracycle buzzing toward Henderson last night on Boulder Hwy. It made me happy. I thought about turning around and chasing him down, but the median was wide and I was tired.

Walking the Neighborhood

I took a walk this evening to read the CSUN/GPSA tombstones, and to look for alternative bike polo venues.  Unfortunately, no alternatives turned up.  Still, I think the best option is playing on the sidewalk east of MPE, if it does not work out with grounds.  Regardless, the walk was fruitful for other reasons.

I talked to some engineering students who ride bicycles and will spread the good word regarding bike polo, and may come play.  From them, I learned about Las Vegas Fixed Gear (lvfixed.com), who apparently also play bike polo.

From chatting with the police I learned that bicycle thefts on campus are on the rise.  The good news is that the police are making a point of checking bike racks for suspicious activity, but an ounce of prevention...

A slight misunderstanding

On wednesday night, a person from intramurals walked over and informed us that Grounds doesn't want us playing on the field. Perhaps it was moving the cones, maybe there were tire tracks, or perhaps it was the reckless abandon with which we enjoy the game. Whatever the reason, we were invited to leave the intramural fields. We did, and proceeded to learn that those fields are the only lit and dry surfaces on UNLV campus.
So now we're seeking out the parties involved in an attempt to share the bike love, encourage an environment of understanding and cooperation, and to apologize for moving the cones. Sometimes you just have to have a little chat to put things right.

So plan on a rousting game of polo back in the intramural fields on wednesday night.

Is the public getting good information

Ran across this show thanks to a friend.

http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/440/index.html

I have been noticing more media focusing on the issues that we've been talking about for years. This show specifically looks at the links between the housing catastrophe, the economic catastrophe, and gas prices. While to some this is an extremely logical correlation, they explore it fairly well, and actually discuss the big issues, the biggest being the unsustainability of construction-oriented car-centric economies.

So hopefully more of this might encourage the yahoos that run this city to think about the future, and maybe even build some intelligent means of getting around.

Total Success

Three on three is about as fun as it gets. Scars were minimal and fun was had by all. Play lasted about 1:15, followed by grub and drinks at Yayo Taco. Maybe next week we'll bring a camera and catch the action.

Looking a bit into the future, it seems Viva Bike Vegas might be an entertaining event during which we can play some polo.

Again?

With a tantalizing turnout last week, we are encouraged and hopeful that the numbers will grow.

The intramural fields are ideal, what with the lights and everything. So if you show up late, head west on Harmon to the fields on the south side of the road. Wow, directions.

We'll be there, with mallets and balls.

We play tonight

Gear is on campus, flyers are being distributed. Hopefully we'll have enough players to have some rousing ball-whacking.
The deal is, we will meet at Lied Library out on the South side, and roll over to a nice grassy area for play. Most likely, we'll be over on the athletic fields north on Harmon, only about 100m away from the library.
