Ride to UNLV Day had three participants. Everyone had a good time, a safe ride, and we decided to do it again from a different location. We are also working on the bike wrenching day. Look for more events coming soon!

Bike to UNLV Day is Next Wednesday

Such a simple idea. Elegant even. We are going to lead a ride from semi-bike-friendly Green Valley to UNLV. There is a route that is safe, convenient, maybe even enjoyable, but few people know about it. Thus, in an effort to encourage bike ridership AND preserve life, we will show it to whomever would like to join us. Meet at the corner of Windmill and Pecos at 8 am. The 40-minute ride will depart shortly thereafter, and we'll get to campus before 9 am. At that point, people can grab a coffee, shower, or prep themselves for a 10 am class.

Bike Polo is Back on Wednesdays

Bike Polo was a mess of success last week during Interbike. For tuesday's tournament, we had maybe 50 people in attendance (mostly spectators)and three hours of solid play. On thursday at the Crits at Mandalay Bay, a second polo tournament popped up with much more out-of-town talent providing the entertainment. Hopefully we'll get some pictures up.
This week, its back to our regularly scheduled match, starting at 7 pm, in the EPA parking lot right next to MPE. See you there.

The Great Interbike Polo Tourney is Tuesday

Imagine people from all over the country descending upon our little city to abuse it for all it's worth. Well, that's happening this week as Interbike, the biggest bicycle trade show in the US is in town.
We'd really like to show these yahoos a good time, so we're hosting a Polo Tournament. And its happening on tuesday, not our regular night. And its happening in a different location, across the street from the UNLV sign at Yayo Taco.
Be there.

Bike to UNLV with Rebel Bikes

The date for the first "Bike to UNLV Day" is set for wednesday, Oct 7. The idea is that there are a few safe and efficient routes to get to UNLV via bicycle. We will be highlighting the first, which connects Henderson/Green Valley to campus by leading a bike ride for people who are bike-commute curious. The official starting point is the Vons parking lot on the SW corner of Windmill and Pecos. We meet at 8, for an arrival on UNLV campus by 9 am, in time to shower/coffee for the 10 am classes. The route looks something like this:

Anyone for polo?

The 2009/2010 Polo season is upon us.

You can just smell the rubber, the asphalt, and the the other stenches rising from the EPA building. Don't worry, it's all about indoor air quality in there. And we're outside.

So come on down, every wednesday, 7 pm. We meet in the LFG/Lied Library area and do a quick ride over to the EPA parking lot for some action. No experience necessary. No special gear needed. Just show up with a bike and we'll give ya everything you need. A helmet might make sense.

We play for an hour or two then head across Maryland for some refreshments.

Bike Lounge @ First Fridays Tonight!

Hosted/sponsored/in-favor of Las Vegas Bike Coop

Its a simple concept, tonight we're going to set up a table as part of the alternative transportation theme, build a bike, show off some freak/art bikes, and try to engage the crowd in getting more involved. We're calling it "Bike Lounge" and are making it a regular FF event/space in which people can physically come together to dork/learn/talk about bikes, do basic maintenance, etc.
We're going to set up and hang out right outside of Paymon's on the east side of the Arts Factory.

All modes are welcome.

Newspaper articles and other nonsense

Its hard to believe, but it seems that all you have to do is ride your bike to work and you wind up in the newspaper.

This certainly is a little silly, and the picture is fantastic, but I think this is direct evidence that people are interested in things that are smarter, cleaner and safer. It seems like the media and marketing agencies are scrambling to find evidence of the new intelligent urban environmentalism that are going on in cities around the country. They're scrambling, and they are not finding it. We can of course provide the up-and-coming stories, but there's really nothing else going on. UNLV is talking about sustainability, but other than some solar panels on a building, those are just empty words. And it's funny because there is so much to be gained by a move to sustainable design and education. Rather than relying upon hotel management, we could be pioneering new routes in education and environment.

And the first step is to get moving on the UNLV student bike organization. Once there is a group, perhaps there can be more articles, and it seems like UNLV pays way more attention to articles in the newspaper than anything else.

The New Polo Season is Upon Us

Wednesday Nights on the UNLV campus, we will play polo.

We have the balls. We have the mallets. All we need are the players.

Meet at the roundabout on Harmon (by Lied Library) at 6pm. We play about 200m away from there, in fact, right here.
Expect an hour or two of play, followed by revelry at Yayo Taco.
